Overcoming Barriers to Physical Activity

Some thoughts on barriers to physical activity, and suggestions to overcome them; technology and easier living conditions have brought about huge numbers of people living a sedentary life. In turn, the number of our youth living sedentary lifestyles has skyrocketed. Why do people become this way?

People don't find exercise enjoyable

No time!

Lack support, and encouragement

Poor self-efficacy and confidence

Fear of being injured, or re-aggravating an old injury

Lack of knowledge about what to do

Now maybe some solutions!

Find a friend who does exercise, and ask if you may come along. Being with someone you enjoy being with will automatically make the experience better.

No time for something means you have prioritized for other things in your life. If getting healthy is truly an ambition you will make time. Even in 10 minute increments, a few times a day, exercise, and its positive effects can take hold.

Ask the people around you to support, and even participate in your new healthy lifestyle. You may even change your company, to find better influences that will help you towards your goal.

Set goals! I, or even google, can give you a good (or good enough to get started) program and schedule, that has an end result you want. Setting a goal to reach at the end of a program is shown to be much more effective than just trying something with no end result in mind.

Some people feel they lack the resources to exercise. However, squats, lunges, planks, sit-ups, push-ups, overhead presses, bent reverse flys (the list goes on!) can all be done in the spot you stand, with no weights. And there is always the great outdoors, especially in Missoula! Go for a walk, a hike, or a run!

If injury is your concern, you will possibly want some expertise in the matter of exercise. You must start slow, and gain confidence in your body to perform the exercises pain, and injury free. If you have an existing injury you may want to seek advise of a physical therapist.

Have a great week!
